I made this Homemade Super Mario Brothers Birthday Cake for my son’s 8th birthday. I got my inspiration from several other pictures of cakes I found online and combined the things I liked and thought I could do. I bought all of the Mario figures from eBay. I think you can find some at stores like Toys R Us. I found the cute little mushroom and star tins in the candy section at a craft store.
The bottom layer was a 10 inch layer and the top 6 inch. The frosting is Wilton’s butter cream recipe. I made several batches. I make sure to have plenty on hand for mistakes or disasters. For the base frosting I colored the bottom layer a shade darker than the top just to mimic some of the different colors found in the Super Mario Brothers game. I made a small batch of marshmallow fondant to do the clouds, coins, stars and the question mark blocks. I cut the coins out with a coke bottle cap, the stars with a cookie cutter .
I used a star tip for the grass and free-handed the red piranha plants and mushrooms.
