This Super Mario cake was made using 1 package of yellow cake mix, according to the directions. For baking, I used 2 round pans (8 in.) and a dozen cupcakes. The round pans were less than 1/2 full, as my kids like cake that’s heavy on the frosting anyway!
The face is one of the rounds, and the hat is made by cutting a moon shape from the other round. The ears, chin and nose were made by carving up a few of the cupcakes to size.
I mixed colors to get the skin tone. The brown is homemade chocolate frosting. The red, black and blue are Wilton squeeze tubes from the grocery store (the kind you can buy tips for and screw ’em right on-super handy!)
I used the star tip on the hat and the round tip for fill in and outlining. If I had it to do over, I would have left the outlining off of the eyes. The CG Mario in all the new games has more of a 3D look without outlining, so that would have portrayed him more accurately.
We had an excited bunch when this guy was unveiled! It took me about an hour to decorate.
I’ve never seen a cuter Mario cake!

Searching the internet for a Mario cake (my son’s turning 8) that’s adorable and relatively simple. This is perfect! I think I can confidentially put this together. Thanks for the help!!
made it for my sons bday ,he loved it, very easy to make
That is such a great idea. I am going to make that for my son’s 9th birthday party. It is a beautiful cake.
This idea was fantastic. It saved the birthday party as I had to make it the same day. I sped up the process by using 2 Bear Paws for the mustache which looked amazing, I only had to trim them a little to get them closer to his nose. And instead of outlining his hat with icing, I used Nibs to give it a 3-D look all along his forehead. His eyebrows were made of cut-up black licorice. The kids loved it. Thank you for the fabulous idea and picture.
Thanks so much for sharing…my grandson wants a Mario cake for his 5th birthday and begged me to make it. I usually use the shaped cake pans but refuse to pay $60 for that pan. I am so glad I won”t have to disappoint him. Great Job!
