Making the Luau cake was so much fun! The cake was a surprise for a friends daughter’s Sweet 16 party, I was excited to make this cake for her to share with her family and friends. The theme was Luau and I set the cake tiers and colors to match the birthday girls dress, bottom layer was blue fondant which represented the water. The cake was chocolate with chocolate chip filling. The second tier was green with vanilla cake and strawberry filling. The top layer was a golden yellow to represent the sun and the cake was fiunfetti. Each tier was accented with beautiful edible Hawaiian themed details.
The top tier has fondant hibiscus flowers, edible 16, Palm tress with a beautiful sunset, and cookies around the outside to look like bamboo. The second tier had fondant surf boards, a tribal mask, two tiki torches, and stenciled hibiscus flowers on the sides. The bottom layer was hand painted to make waves, the base has edible sand made from light brown sugar and vanilla wafers crushed. I added gum paste flip flops in the sand, small flowers, and an adorable sea turtle. I finished the board off by adding a luau leis around the outer board.
Alyssa, the Sweet 16 girl, was so excited when I arrived to assemble the cake for her party! everyone at her party told me that the cakes was delicious and beautifully decorated. I was so happy and pleased that the cake was a huge hit and that the birthday girl was happy that I made her cake just for her.
