Cool Homemade Swimming Pool Birthday Cake

I found this swimming pool birthday cake in the Women’s Day magazine (I believe it was April or May ’06 issue) and decided to make it for my Grandson’s 1st birthday. I am far from a baker, but I know I wanted to give my first grandchild the ultimate 1st birthday cake. It was a bit of work, but definitely worth it.

I used (2) 8″ round cakes cut out a kidney shape for the pool, I used blue Jello for the water in the pool. Used Airheads for the slide and the waves on the side of cake. Crumbled graham crackers for sand on the edge of cake plate, round peppermint puffs for beach balls, Teddy Grahams with icing as bathing suits, pretzel sticks as my flag poles and my flags were sour stripes. Blue miniature M&Ms for border.

Airheads were also formed and used as the surf boards. This took me and my husband (who formed the waves and placed on side of cake) a day and well into the night to complete. Everyone was amazed at our abilities.

  1. Your cake turned out great. I made that pool cake too and now can’t find the magazine to make the tub with tile floor cake. Do you know where I can find the recipes?

  2. Yes, I would like that issue also. I did save those recipes for the cakes at one time. Since, I don’t have kids and my niece’s and nephew’s are way older I sent to a friend that bakes cakes. Now I would like to know how to get a copy of that issue? I’ll be checking booksales and libraries, & yard sales. thanks.
