This swimming pool cake was taken from an old Australian Women’s Weekly Cake book. I made it for my son’s 1st birthday. It was a replica of a cake my mother-in-law once made for my husband and it had the original (cupie?) dolls that were on my husband’s cake (yes my MIL had kept them for nearly 30 years!).
Of course my son had blue water (jelly) rather then green as blue jelly wasn’t available 30 years ago. It is a very easy cake to make. Just a round butter cake with a circle cut out at the top and filled with jelly. Chocolate biscuit sticks around the outside and musk sticks, jelly snakes and licorice to decorate. It is best to have the jelly set before you put it onto the cake then you don’t have to put the cake in the fridge – which tends to dry cakes out.
Hi, does anyone know where I can get the small plastic cupid dolls for the swimming pool cake by this Saturday? Would love to ask the maker of this cake as I am also close to Canberra. Thanks Jacqui
You don’t have to use plastic dolls, they can be jelly babies. It has the exact same effect.
You can get them from The Style Emporium at Gold Creek Village if you are near Canberra
Hi I bought 4 dolls for $10 from an eBay store for my swimming pool cake.
