This Sword And Shield Birthday Cake was for a family friend on his 13th birthday. The shield shape was easy to do – just cutting a rectangular cake to shape. The cupcakes were simple buttercream with terrific soldier figurines we got at a local cake supply store.
The sword itself was made of gum paste with edible silver leaf. The handle colour was brushed on, we were pretty happy with it. The cake itself has a layer of buttercream with fondant on top. The fondant was quite literally finger painted. Seriously! I found it just worked best.
Using a variety of colours, I was able to make it look like rusted silver. He loved his cake and I think it’s my favourite one.
This is a fantastic cake! Nicely done :-)
