My son has wanted a dinosaur birthday every year from age 2. When he turned 4, I decided to make his T Rex cake as I did not think the ones I bought every year were “cool” enough.
I found this cake topper of a motion sensored popping T-Rex that roared and had red eyes. You can buy it from any cake store or online. Search T-Rex cake topper and it usually comes up. Otherwise, I found mine on eBay. It was just the thing I needed to make his dinosaur/Jurassic scene.
So I used the yellow cake mix I normally use from allrecipes.com (four egg yellow cake) and made my own white chocolate buttercream and a raspberry filling. The cake was a layered 9×14 cake but I had to cut a triangle piece out of the top layer which fit the T-Rex cake topper. I also made cupcakes (rocks or extra mountains in the scenery) to make up the difference.
Now to finish off the outside, I covered it with the buttercream and used white frosting and colored it blue, green, red/orange to decorate. I also added some trees that came with the topper, and I used a cupcake to make a volcano that oozed “lava”. It was everything my son wanted. He couldn’t stop saying “Wow, that’s cool, my Mommy made that.”
