This Teapot cake was actually for my best friend’s bridal shower, and the colors match her wedding. The shower was at a tea house, so I thought a tea pot cake would be really fun. I’d never done a 3-D cake before, so I read up on this site for ideas first!
I started by baking two cakes, the first in a batter bowl and the second was an 8″ round. I used a store-bought cake mix with pudding in the batter, since the denseness of the cake seemed well suited to shaped cakes. Once both cakes were cool, I flipped the 8′ cake over so the rounded side was down on the plate, then shaved the top off the batter bowl cake to make a flat top.
I turned the batter bowl cake over on top of the 8″ round, then cut the round down to the same size since the circumference was a little too large.
To decorate the cake, I started by doing a crumb coat of chocolate frosting over the whole thing, then refrigerated it overnight. The handle, spout, lid detail and flowers are all made from ready-to-use colored fondant that I bought in a 4-pack. I shaped the handle, spout and role by hand, then cut out the flowers with a set of flower shaped cookie cutters. For the handle and spout I inserted wood skewers into the soft fondant and let it dry overnight.
The next morning before the shower, I put it all together, giving the whole cake a full coating of chocolate frosting, then inserting the handle and spout, then decorating with rope and flowers (glued on with frosting).
The cake was a total hit and no one wanted to eat it because it was so pretty!
