I made this Teddy Bears Picnic Cake for a friend’s little girl’s 1st birthday. She doesn’t like anything pink and girlie so I thought this would be ideal. Its a rectangle Madeira cake covered with ready to roll fondant icing.
To make the picnic blanket I cut little yellow and blue squares, laid them out like a blanket and rolled them so they joined together. It was very effective.
The bears are also made from fondant icing but I think marzipan would be a better option. I got the directions off youtube to make the bears.
The grass and name are piped using a no.1 nozzle and butter icing.
My favorite bits, the ladybirds, were very easy but very effective I think. They are just little balls of fondant cut in half and shaped. then I used a red powder mixed with rejuvenating spirit to paint them and the black is just a food colour paste painted on. Very fiddly but fun.
The cake is incredible! will try it for my girl, too.
This is exactly what I want to do for my son’s first birthday–thank you for the great tips!
