I was all set on having a Thomas cake for my son’s 3rd birthday since he is obsessed with the DVDs. I had instructions from the internet and everything. About two weeks before the party he decided he wanted a Henry cake (since Henry is number 3 and he is 3 – so much for kid’s logic!)
So now I had to start from scratch. The instructions for the Fat Controller (made out of plastic icing) I got from the internet but I cannot remember where though. The face of Henry I moulded from plastic icing using one of my since trains as a model (he turned out looking more like Gordon than Henry, but nobody seemed to notice!) I baked a sheet cake and a round cake in a can. and built the train out of pieces of cake. I ended up using butter icing because I could not manage to drape the plastic icing around the cake. The black pieces (roof, windows) are plastic icing and the wheels as well (I did not manage to get the colour of the wheels any darker. The coal in the coal truck (not visible in the picture) are licorice cut into pieces.
Well at least my son thought I made the best Thomas and Friends Birthday Cake ever!
