My son loves Thomas the Tank Engine and I was going to make a 3D cake, however Thomas’ number is 1 and my son was turning 2, so I decided to just do his face which doesn’t include his number.
This Thomas the Tank Engine cake was quite simple compared to other cakes I have made. I just baked a chocolate mud cake with a wet cloth wrapped around the sides to get a flat cake. Then I used chocolate butter icing to smooth out the imperfections. I then put it in the fridge for a few hours.
I coloured the fondant earlier in the week, so it was ready to be rolled. When it came time to assemble the cake, it only took about 1 hour.
I used some of the fondant to shape Thomas’ cheeks, chin and nose. Then I rolled the grey fondant out and laid it over the top. I used circle cutters to do the eyes and just freehand to do the mouth and eyebrows.
Once I had finished that, I realized it didn’t have any blue to identify him as Thomas so I coloured some more fondant blue and rolled out a strip. I added this to the side just wetting the grey fondant underneath slightly to allow it to hold together.
I couldn’t find any thin licorice so had to cut some from a thick strip. I used toothpicks to hold it to the sides, above the blue fondant. I then simply moulded the black chimney and smoke.
