This is the 3D Thomas train cake from Debbie Brown’s book “Children’s Character cakes”.
I started days in advance by making buttercream, edible glue and modeling paste. I coloured the modeling paste and rolled icing in advance as well. I also made the wheels and some of the fiddly bits like the whistles in advance.
The homemade Thomas the Tank engine 3rd birthday cake was just a packet butter cake. It was made from a 20cm square pan. I also made some extra as spare parts.
It starts with 5 rectangles piled on top of each other. By cutting various sections away you can get the basic train shape. It is then a matter of the piece by piece rolling and attaching the coloured rolled icing and modeling all the various pieces, sticking them on with edible glue.
Circle cutters were very useful in making this cake – all sizes. I estimated this cake took about 12 hours. Of course I am just a beginner so would take others a lot less time. I am slow.
The verdict “ha ha his face looks funny”. This was said by both my kids at different times. So we named him “Old man Thomas” because his face was a bit wrinkly.
My son Boston really loved it though.
