I did this Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake for my son’s 2nd birthday as he is Thomas crazy. I’m not very good at drawing so I used a Thomas the Tank drawing from a colouring-in book. I blew it up to the size I wanted then used it as a template.
I cooked the cake in a lined roasting tray. Then used the picture to cut out the main shape. Once this was done I cut the picture in jigsaw pieces so I could do the outline markings. I iced the cake all over in buttercream icing to stop any crumbs. Then using coloured buttercream I piped the icing on using the star nozzle.
For the white of his eyes and mouth I used royal icing as it was the only way I got white. I also piped the happy birthday on the side with the same nozzle. The cake took a good 5 hours to ice (trying to look after 2 month old at the same time) but it was worth every second when I saw my son’s face light up when he saw “T” as he calls him.
Love the cake! Funny thing is my son’s name is also Lachlan and we are doing a Thomas theme for his 2nd birthday this year.
WOW My son’s name is Lachlan and spelled the same yours. I thought this was a unique name, guess it must be getting popular.
