I had made a Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake for my son’s 3rd birthday using the Wilton shaped pan. This year, he was having his first big birthday party with 18 kids attending! (That alone is another fun story). Brennan wanted another Thomas cake for his 4th, so I wasn’t going to make him the same cake again.
This time, I used the Wilton stand up train pan on top of a sheet cake. I made the sheet cake from 2 mixes and frosted it with buttercream. Then I used pound cake for the Thomas cake because it is more dense and doesn’t fall apart. I learned that one the hard way with another 3D cake. I used one of my son’s toys and some pictures for a template and freehand decorated Thomas with stars and lines, also with buttercream.
He was so pleased to announce to his friends, “The Thomas Cake!!” All the moms were so impressed, too!
