This Thomas the Tank Engine Island of Sodor Cake is inspired by the Thomas the Tank Engine show. It is set on the Island of Sodor. The cake is a homemade marble pound cake. The mountain is also cake.
Instead of using the dome cake, I used an 8″ round and a 1/2 ball cake pan. This allowed the dense cake to cook more evenly. I carved out the tunnel and then put support dowels to hold the mountain firmly in place. Then, I crumb coated the whole cake before decorating it.
Pine Trees: sugar cones, trimmed to size (with a bread knife), and then piped with a dark green buttercream.
Rail Road Ties: Royal Icing. Boulders: Homemade marshmallow fondant, rolled into balls, molded, and then painted- thinning food coloring with lemon extract. Water: Blue Butter Cream with a blue piping gel glaze on top.
Beach: This is a special blend of sugar, brown sugar, cocoa, and nutmeg. Bridge: I found that my original fondant bridge, that I worked on for a week, would not hold the train with the coal tender. So, it is a Hershey Bar.
OMG this is awsome!! great job!!
