This Thomas the Train 3D Cake is the first time I had every made a Thomas the Train cake! A friend wanted Thomas as the theme for her son’s 1st birthday and she just had to have a 3D cake for him to have all to himself, so I went and purchased the Wilton 3D train pan and thought it wasn’t the exact train that Thomas is but I can make this work!
I used a Pillsbury white cake mix and baked the cake. I did add Meringue Powder the mix to help the texture of the cake. Then as the cake was cooling I started on my buttercream icing and mixing all the colors for Thomas to come alive.
Fixed the cake board and started my project. It was an easy set up, once I trimmed the bottom of the cake, so it would set up straight on the board. I used the buttercream icing as the glue to hold the cake to the board and re-enforced around the bottom of the cake with icing to ensure the cake wouldn’t fall in transporting it.
Then the fun began as I looked at a book of Thomas to get the right colors and design of Thomas. I had to completely cover the bottom of the cake where the wheels are to make them look more like Thomas. Then the rest fell into place and before I knew it I had transformed a Thomas the Train cake. I made Thomas’ number 1 for the birthday boy!! The hardest part was trying to get his face to look exactly right. I finally decided I had done the best job and this is what I finished with!
Hope you like it! I was really fun to make!
