I made this Thomas The Train Birthday Cake for my son Tyler’s 3rd birthday. He is fascinated with trains especially Thomas, so the cake is loosely based on Thomas, but essentially just a cute train cake with carriage.
This is a great cake for those who don’t bake – like me. I brought a couple of pre-made square sponge cakes which I cut to make the carriage and the bottom body of and back end of the train. The top part of the train and the chimney was made from one large Swiss roll and one small Swiss roll. All the pieces were held together by bamboo skewers.
I piped the cake with butter icing and added some plastic eyes and placed smarties in the back carriage. Wheels were made with aniseed rings.
Tyler loved it and I was so proud of it – especially because I don’t bake! It’s amazing what a bit of icing, colour and imagination can do.
Hope you enjoy it and get some good ideas!
