My son, Devyn, turned 3. He said he wanted a “Thomas cake with fire”, which meant he wanted candles. I bought 2 boxes of Duncan Hines Devil’s Food Chocolate Cake and Betty Crocker Cream Cheese frosting. I had to bake the cake about an extra 20-30min in addition to the 38 min recommendation. Then I leveled it out, carved out a circle and the sides and bottom edge. I used all the cake scraps and filled the hole. I frosted the circle separately, and then placed it back on top of the scrapes so Thomas’ face would be raised.
I used licorice and for the lines, and circles and marshmallows for the eyes. Next time, I would use gel instead of regular icing. I think gel would be much easier to work with. It took me THREE hours to put together and decorate, and while I know it is far from perfect, it was so worth it to do something homemade for him. I was tempted to buy a cake, but I think it would have cost triple what I paid, and this is much more memorable and meaningful for all of us.
I got the Thomas The Train Birthday Cake Design idea and different tips off several sites including this one.
