For our son’s 3rd birthday, I knew that I wanted to make him a train cake to continue with our Thomas theme. However, being new to cake decorating I wasn’t ready to attempt to try to make Thomas himself. So, we made two train cars pulled by an actual Thomas toy. (We used the shake and go Thomas as he seemed to be the perfect size to pull the two compartments).
Thanks to someone else for suggesting this on this site!
One compartment was filled with coal (crushed mini Oreos), the other with gummy bears (we used the mini loaf pans – but there is more than one size of these – we didn’t use the smallest but the next size). For the bottom of the track we used chocolate wafer cookies and rice krispies with dyed green coconut for the grass.
Something creative my husband thought of (I can’t take the credit) since we knew we would need more cake – is to bake two big loaf cakes. We then iced and stacked them and made a station. It worked well as it fit the theme but ensured we had enough cake for everyone. Since we had extra red pull n peel licorice – we put it around the outside of the train station to look like siding. Sliced almonds were put on top for the roof.
Everyone thought the cake was very moist and delicious – used boxed cakes but made with milk rather than water.
