My son Owen was turning 6, Owen is Autistic but he just loves Thomas the Tank engine. Given the cost of shop bought cakes I thought I would have a go at making my own Thomas The Train Birthday Cake Design for Owen.
I had tremendous fun making it, it was very messy and with the jam, buttercream and icing it was also very sticky. I made 3 rectangular shaped cakes and sandwiched them together with jam and butter cream and layered them on top of one another then using one of Owens toy Thomas trains sitting nearby I cut the cake into a rough shape of Thomas. Then I used white ready made icing blocks and coloured them using food colourings, softening and colouring using my hands (bit like you would with playdough/plastercine) rolled out the icing and placed the appropriate colours to the appropriate section of the train.
I used icing pens for the finer detail and mixed up some green icing, rolled it out very thinly and covered a cake board, marked out traintracks on the green icing (again using an icing pen) and also used the pen to write a message.
It was by no means a perfect looking cake, but it was a first attempt at doing a cake remotely like this, Owen recognized who it was supposed to be and it tasted delicious.
