I made this Thomas train cake for my grandson’s 3rd birthday. I used the Wilton 3D train pan and 2 loaf pans. I first iced it with buttercream icing, then covered it with marshmallow fondant.
I made Thomas’ face the day before from the fondant and let it harden up some. I put a cookie stick in it so when I was ready I could just stick it on the front of the cake through the “plow” part.
I also put some buttercream on the back of it so it would stick to the front of the cake. I found instructions on the web on how to make the face.
I then looked at a toy Thomas to decorate the rest of the engine. I used coiled licorice for the wheels. Cotton candy for the smoke from the smoke stack.
For cargo I put chocolate coins and Rollo candies in the cargo cars. I had cut depressions in the loaf cakes prior to icing and fondanting them. The railroad tracks were also fondant.
I found a colored pic of Thomas on the web that I downloaded into my photo program, which I wrote happy birthday on, then reversed it, printed out both pics and taped them together on a wooden skewer.
From soup to nuts it took about 12 hours to make this cake.
I was browsing the web, looking for ideas for my nephew’s Thomas birthday party. You did a great job on this – love the cotton candy coming out as steam and the coiled licorice! CUTE :-)
