I was asked to make a Tigger birthday cake for the 1st birthday of a beautiful little girl. I must admit that Tigger is one of my favorite characters and therefor I was very happy to make a cake of this lovely character.
I knew that I wanted to make a 3D Tigger out of cake but since there were going to be a lot of guests at the party, I decided to add more cake by putting Tigger on top of another cake.
So first I started with the cake underneath Tigger. I baked an oval shaped marble cake, rolled out a piece of baby pink colored sugar paste and simply laid it on the cake as if it was a blanket. To create even more the effect of a blanket, I did some quilting stitching effect too.
For Tigger, I baked 2 rectangular shaped plain vanilla Madeira cakes and put them on top of each other. I took great care that the cake wasn’t bigger than the oval one and started to carve the head. Then I carved the hands and the feet as well. I had a picture of Tigger to help me but I must admit that it was very difficult to sculpt a cake.
When the sculpture was ready, I dirty iced it and covered the whole thing in orange colored sugar paste. Now that Tigger was nice and covered, I positioned it on top of the oval cake and started to finish Tigger. I did the face, the ears, the nose, the whiskers, the black stripes and the tail as well.
The cake was finished but although there was the pink ‘blanket’, I still thought that it needed something else to make it look like a cake for a little girl so I decided to cut some little pink, purple and yellow flowers and put them on the edges of the blanket.
Now the cake was really ready and when the birthday girl saw it she wanted to give it a big hug. How sweet!.
