I made this Tinkerbell birthday cake for my daughter’s second birthday. She adores Tinkerbell!
I bought Wilton’s Wonder Mold at AC Moore. I also bought their prepackaged fondant. This was my first attempt at using fondant for a cake so I thought I ought to use, tried and true!
I dyed the fondant green using green food coloring. For the dress, I rolled small pieces of fondant and then set them over the top of the cake (sort of like a starfish shape)and then laid out the fondant for the dress over the top. This created the “pleated” effect. It is super important to frost the cake prior to using the fondant. I used green shimmer dust over the top of the dress. The “tink” accents were just store bought.
Instead of using the doll that comes with the Wondermold, I bought a Tinkerbell doll at Target and removed her legs. I stuck the body in the top of the cake and it fit beautifully. I saved the legs, by the way, and they went back on easily. Now we have the doll and a memory of the cake.
I baked a sheet cake for the base of the cake and covered it in buttercream frosting. The two other fairies on the cake were store bought at Target as well. It was great because my kids got to have the fairies to play with afterwards.
My daughter was thrilled with her cake! That is why I like to make my own cakes because I derive infinite joy from seeing the recipients’ faces.
