This was my first attempt at making a whimsy cake a.k.a. Topsy Turvy cake. It was for a friend’s daughter’s 16th birthday party which had an Alice in Wonderland theme. It is not a true whimsy cake in that the construction is not how the traditional whimsy cake is created. That is, I did not carve pits into the bottom tiers to sit the top tiers in side of. If you look closely, you can see that I simply carved the sides of the cakes at different angles to create a Topsy Turvy look (with the exception of the top tier of course). I then stacked the tiers using the normal stacking method.
It is iced in all buttercream (call me old fashioned or lazy but I am a die-hard buttercream artist, I never cover my cakes in fondant) with the exception of the fondant border and ribbon roses and other accents. I used clear piping gel to adhere the fondant stripes, triangles and polka dots. The initial and swirls were made from royal icing and “glued” to a lollipop stick using royal icing as well.
This was a lot of fun and the customer loved it. For those of you intimidated with the traditional whimsy method (as I was) I encourage you to try this simpler method. Good luck and happy caking!
I totally love this cake! It is so creative:)
What font did you use for the letter.. I love this cake and would like to give it a try.. and help would be great….
I love the way this cake looks and it’s so awesome that you used all buttercream.
Bravo! What an excellent cake! Thanks for validating buttercream icing…..I’m die hard myself. This just may be the “style” I’m looking for to celebrate my daughter’s 16th. Thanks for posting!!
What a fantastic effort for your first attempt. I love the colours and the patterns for each tier. You have really inspired me to use butter cream for my next cake as you have. It is so creatively done. WOW!
