This Tow Mater Birthday Cake was a first attempt at using marshmallow fondant. I am terrible with buttercream, so when my nephew wanted a Mater cake, I decided to try the fondant that is supposed to taste good!
I used 2 carved Sara Lee Frozen Pound Cakes for the truck, and a single cake mix (baked in a 9X13 and covered with tinted coconut) for the grassy field. One pound cake was then shaped into the hood and lower body of the truck. The other pound cake was cut in two. One half became the cab and windshield of the truck, the other became the back of the truck where the tow mechanism sits.
I used cocoa tinted fondant for the whole truck, then white fondant for the windows. Gumdrops, a peanut butter cup, and green lifesavers were stuck on with gel icing for lights, engine and eyes. Extra fondant was shaped for the side mirrors.
The tow part was made from chocolate ladyfingers and licorice laces. The wheels were made from York Peppermint Pattie Cookies. I put the truck on a saran-wrapped necklace box, put it on the sheet cake and wedged the cookie tires into place.
The pound cakes worked great and were easy to mold under the fondant. All in all, this project was messy as anything to make, but tons of fun! And my nephew gave me a big hug, which he normally avoids at all cost. He told his mom later that it was his favorite birthday present. Success! By the way, marshmallow fondant IS super tasty and not too sweet.
