Coolest Toy Story Birthday Cake

I made this Homemade Toy Story Birthday Cake for my son’s 3rd birthday from ideas I got on this website. The cake is Funfetti mix (I think it stays the most moist of all the store bought cake mixes…and looks cute when you cut into it at kid’s parties).

The icing is white Wilton icing that comes in the huge tubs from Michaels. It tastes great, keeps well, and can be dyed to any color imaginable using Wilton icing dyes. The base is a 12×18 sheet cake (two funfetti mixes). I dyed the icing the light brown color for the floor using Wilton gell dye. Then I used chocolate chips and Reesse’s peanut butter chips to make the look of the flooring. I was going for hardwood floor but most people said they liked the way I did the “carpet”…oh well.

It tasted GREAT which is always my primary goal with cakes, something about the Funfetti, Wilton white icing, and chocolate chips is just so yummy! I made the bed with a loaf pan and then trimmed it square after it cooled. I iced the bed with white icing first for taste and too look like sheets. I made the pillow with a bunch of icing. I bought pre-made blue fondant for the comforter. This was my first time ever using fondant and I had trouble getting it off the tray. I rolled it out on without it ripping at the lines I had scribed into it for the “quilted” look. But eventually I got it by starting over and putting powdered sugar down first.

I used yellow M&Ms, “glued on” with icing, to decorate the quilt. The headboard and footboard are Oreo Styx just pushed down into the cake below. Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, and Hamm were in a multipack at Toys R Us (cheaper than Walmart or Target surprisingly). The Army Men came in a big tub of like 40 of them. I used some for the cake and then each child got one in their party favor bag. The toy phone is actually a key chain I found at a dollar store. Etch-a-Sketch and Slinky Dog were in the party favor isle of The Party Store in multi-packs. I bought a bunch for favors and just used one each for the cake. The blocks are from our toybox. I couldn’t find a 2nd “N” for Johnny so I had to use an upside down “U”…oh well.

The cake took me a total of about 4.5 hrs to make…not bad at all. It was SOOO worth it to see the look on my son’s face. All the party guests were amazed I made it.
