This Toy Story Birthday Cake Idea was for my son’s 4th birthday and my first attempt at using fondant. For the base I used a 10″ pie pan with an angled edge. The ship was made using 2 8″ rounds and a Pyrex bowl at the top. After stacking the 3 layers and inserting rods, I shaved the edges of the bottom two layers to curve the front & flatten the back of the ship.
It was then covered with Wilton’s white rolled fondant. The ship (which weighed a good 3lbs) was then placed on top of the larger base slightly off-center towards the back – to fit the characters. The base was then frosted with a star tip.
The ship accents, including the wings were also made with fondant, colored with the Wilton gel dyes and “glued” using water. The lettering is sugar letters from the store and the characters, between 1.5″-2.5″ in size, were bought on eBay and shipped straight from China (only $4.50)!
To say the least, it was a big hit!
