I did research on this site before making this Tractor And Hay Wagon Birthday Cake for my then 2 year old. I considered cutting the cake from a sheet cake, but I ordered a plastic cake pan for the tractor and decorated it to match my son’s favorite International tractor.
The plastic pan has been used 2 other times and works great! To get the black icing I started with chocolate frosting and used Wilton color. The wagon and hay bales are cut from a 9 x 13 cake and decorated using a spreader and a #16 star tip to make the swirl on the hay bales. I used a the outside of a Pampered Chef adjustable measuring cup to cut out the hay bales. They were very hard to ice on the sides and made too big of a piece of cake for 1 person.
I would recommend using cupcakes instead, they would be a tad smaller and would be easier to ice. This is by far our family’s most favorite cake to date!
I love this cake! My Dad is an International Tractor fan and I plan to use your idea for his birthday in January! Where did you order the pan? Great Job!!
where did you get the pan?
I ordered the pan online from a confectionery house. It is a plastic pan, but worked great. I have used it several times and had no problems.
You said this is a plastic pan? I am guessing you just decorated the pan and did not bake a cake in it?
This is such an awesome cake. I plan to try to make one for my sons 2nd birthday. Thanks for all the tips.
I found what looks like the same pan on Amazon. It’s plastic, but works like an aluminum pan and can be used in the oven or microwave.
