This Homemade Train Cake was so much work, but well worth it! I baked several cakes (different flavors) in bread loaf pans. Once they were completely cooled, we transformed each “loaf” into a train car. I used Wilton’s 3D pan for the engine, but the rest of the cars were made from loaf pans.
This was for my son’s 1st birthday, so we made it kid friendly. We made a circus car with animal crackers. A Lionel car (because my husband collects them), a log car where the ‘logs’ are pretzel rods, a Cheerios car, etc. The tender and coal cars have crushed oreos as the “coal” and mini oreos were used for the wheels. We used twizzlers and kit-kats for the track and all-in-all this thing was roughly 9 feet long in 3, 3ft sections.
Everybody loved it and there was one ‘car’ that was reserved for my son’s “smash cake”. I still get compliments on it from time to time.
