I started with three different kinds of cake mixes, chocolate, rainbow & lemon. I used a large loaf pan for the main part and mini disposable loaf pans for the cars. The first train has half a mini loaf on top. And on top of that is just a slice of a mini loaf cake. I used an ice cream cone for the smoke stack.
The frosting is a cream cheese recipe which worked very well, although make sure it is cold when working with it. I also cut the loafs to size when they were frozen, much easier than when they are thawed!
The tracks are black twizzlers, and the rest was just lots of fun! Most grocery stores have large bulk sections of candy. Much cheaper than buying individual bags of everything. I used some small animals and cage from a dollar store for the animal car.
My son and his friends absolutely loved it!
