My daughter wanted a pirate party for her 5th birthday so I decided to try my hand at making the cake myself. This was the first time I had made anything other than a basic round or rectangle cake so it was a stretch. I made a 9×13 cake and cut it in half.
Before placing stacking the two halves I wanted to be sure it was sort of propped open so I put a bunch of candy necklaces and bracelets, and gold chocolate coins inside to hold it somewhat open. I scattered crushed graham crackers around it to look like sand. I frosted it and used more candy to decorate around it and added ring pops as well.
On top I used a fruit roll and mini M&M’s. This homemade treasure chest birthday cake came out better than I expected and was surprised at how easy it was.
