Coolest Treasure Chest Birthday Cake

I made this Homemade Treasure Chest Birthday Cake for my grandson’s 1st birthday. His party was held in a soft play centre which was called pirates cove. This is the second cake I have made, the first being his christening cake, which was just a 2 tier white cake with a bit of blue. So don’t be too scared to have a go.

This cake was made from a 12” square tin, using a Madeira cake mix, from one side of the cake cut a 2” strip and then cut the rest of the cake in half, using the 2” strip cut out wedge along the long side, this is used to left the lid of the chest. To curve the lid just cut the lid to shape. I covered a 14” cake board and used two small bits of cake to make the mounds, the sand was made from crumbled cake.

The main part of the chest was a chocolate coloured icing and the bars were teddy bear coloured icing. I mixed a small amount of white and teddy bear icing to get the colour for the map. Fill the chest with what sweets you think looks best and what’s available. Silver edible balls were used to decorate the chest. The internet is a great place to get ideas.
