I made this Treasure Chest Birthday Cake Idea for nephew’s 7th Birthday Pirate Themed Party. I was actually looking for treasure chest ideas and came upon this website. I love baking and decorating cakes. But I’m just barely starting to learn and try new things. I saw pictures of a few treasure chest cakes and decided I could totally do it! I think this has been the most difficult yet most rewarding cake I’ve made so far.
I made 4 rectangular cakes (chocolate of course!) in a 9×13 pan and layered three cakes and iced with chocolate frosting and chilled them for about an hour. I then propped the fourth cake on a piece of cardboard but stuck 3 skewers to hold the top cake up at an angle. I iced the cake with chocolate frosting completely and created the plank like indentions with a small spatula. I left the cake to chill for about an hour.
I then outlined the cake with black icing and bought 3 bags of chocolate coins (it got a little pricey) so I decided to buy plastic coins for the “inside” of the treasure chest and added the actual chocolate coins on the side of the cake, ring pops, and some beaded necklaces for additional decoration. I also crushed about 2 or 3 packs of graham crackers to look like sand to cover the aluminum foil the cake was on. I then added a few accessories like the white chocolate skulls and compass to give it a little something extra. My nephew loved it!
