Coolest Treasure Chest Cake

My son Alex wanted a pirate birthday for his 7th so we started looking around for cake ideas. We always look on this site to get all our ideas and then make a Treasure Chest Cake into our own.

I used 2 chocolate cake mixes and baked them in a 9 X 13 pan. I then cooled and froze the cake. I took it out of the freezer when I was ready to decorate it (2 days later) and cut it in half so I had 2 cakes that were 9 X 6 1/2. I cut the top off of one of those cakes to use for the lid, and stacked the other part of it on top of the cake so it looked tall.

I then frosted it all with a chocolate buttercream and ran a fork through it to look like wood grain. I own a candy store so we used candy from the store as the “treasure”. Rock candy, chocolate coins, Rolos, Kisses, mini peanut butter cups, Ring Pops. Basically anything that was gold, silver or looked like jewels.

I laid the lid part of the cake on a spatula (so I could transfer it easier) and iced it. I then put the lid on the treasure chest and it was supported by all the candy. It never slid or cracked at all.

I used a yellow fruit roll up that I cut into strips for the box straps. I tried to find a yellow fruit by the foot but there was none to be found in my area. I then put brown M & M’s on the straps with icing.

Everything was edible except the strands of gold and purple pearls that we laid over the top.
