I wanted to make a homemade twilight birthday cake for my daughter’s 17th birthday, it was her idea to make it in the shape of a book.
I made two 9×13 red velvet cakes, and filled them with cookies and cream filling made with cream cheese, and golden Oreo’s, and then iced with buttercream icing. The letters, and scrolls are made from royal icing, the scroll at the bottom is copied from part of the Cullen Family Crest.
The book cover is made from modeling chocolate coloured black. I also painted the black with gel colour and clear vanilla, that is why it looks shiny (it was still a little wet).
The apple is made from Rice Cereal Treats covered in red modeling chocolate. The chess pieces are made from a candy mold, and the ribbon, ruffled tulip, pages of the book, and chessboard are made from fondant. I cut out the ruffled tulip petals freehand, and then painted the red on with gel colour mixed with clear vanilla. I should have painted the ribbon also, because it still has white film of cornstarch on it.
I also covered the cake board in fondant, you can’t see it in the picture but I stamped a pattern in it using a rubber stamp.
I wish I had centered my daughter’s name, but the letters are made from royal icing and I didn’t want to handle them to much because they were very fragile. I made them out of royal icing because I used the ‘Twilight Font’, which I found Online.
