Coolest Twilight Cake

I made this Twilight cake for a 9 year old girl in my son’s class. She wanted something “Twilight” so I decided to go with the book cover. I didn’t really want to do the cake entirely black because black icing stains everyone’s mouth so I just did a thin crumb layer of black (starting with chocolate icing)over a chocolate cake.

I drew a picture of the hands on butcher paper, cut it out and placed it on the cake to avoid putting black icing on that area. I sprinkled black sparkled decorating sugar over the black areas to dress it up and then outlined the hands with black icing using a round tip.

Then I pulled the drawing away and filled in the details. I used a real apple of course. I also dusted silver shimmer powder in areas to give it a chrome finish although the picture does not show that very well.

  1. Made this cake for my daughters’ 12th birthday party. Didn’t have any black so improvised with drinking chocolate powder. Not as dramatic as the black but effective. Just a note of caution. Trim the border, and cutout of arms and hands before you put on the powder. Icing will not stick to the cake if powder is on. Also, I iced the area for the arms and hands first with cream color icing then placed the cut out on top before trimming and powder.

Thanks for sharing your fabulous cake. My daughter was so proud of her Coolest birthday cake ever!
