For my daughter’s 13th birthday she wanted an under the sea theme. So I decided to attempt to create a 3D sea turtle birthday cake. I used a simple white cake mix, added Wilton’s green food coloring as to make it like the color of the inside of the turtle. I totally impressed myself from beginning to end with this one.
First I baked 3 9 inch round cakes and used a Wilton cake pan that says happy birthday on it in a round shape. This cake and two of the rounds made the body and shell of turtle. Of course just stacked together it looked more like a sandwich. I wasn’t too sure how I was going to get the shape of the shell. For the legs used round cakes by placing a dinner plate near the edge, cut a thumbnail moon for each leg. The head and tail were shaped from cupcakes.
I made the old school icing my mom taught me many years ago to make, the sweet stuff, pure powder sugar and shortening. Added green to get a light color and dirty iced the body, shell, legs, tail, and head to get a smooth surface covering the cake and sticking parts together. This took a little time but not too bad. I used a piping bag and star tip to decorate. I still was not sure I was going to make this look like a turtle. Took my time and used my imagination and mad skills. I used light color of green icing to make outline of pattern on shell and piped the legs head and tail. I used darker color to fill in the pattern. Had to put a couple layers of icing to round out the shell and give his head some shape.
I crushed a few Oreo cookies and vanilla wafers together to make dirty sand as if he was on bottom of sea. I sprinkled it all around and then sprinkled blue flakes all over him as if he was in water. I used a few toys I picked up from Goodwill that were coral and jellyfish. It looks like he is swimming through the coral on bottom of sea. It all came together surprisingly in a short period of time. She absolutely LOVED the cake. All the kids were amazed and the smile on her face made me feel successful!!
