Coolest Unicorn Birthday Cake

This Unicorn birthday cake was my very first 3 tier fondant cake and I was very nervous. For my daughter’s 4th birthday in November 2011 all she would talk about was a Unicorn birthday cake. I was at a loss and had no idea how to create her this cake. I searched for books and the internet for ideas but couldn’t find one that I felt confident trying to do. I didn’t want to try and make a 3-dimensial unicorn because I am NOT good and trying to sculpt cake into something. I finally gave up! The day before her birthday I went and bought my first set of tiered baking pans. I used a 10 inch, 8 inch and 6 inch cake pans to create this cake.

After I had baked all 3 cakes I let them cool in the freezer for about 3 hours. After they were frozen I was ready to start creating this perfect unicorn cake for my daughter. I started by icing all of them with butter cream frosting. Then I made homemade marshmallow fondant and covered each layer I added food coloring to make the pink. I stacked all the cakes and was so relived to actually see that it was looking like a cake.

I decorated each layer. I used small cookie cutters to cut pieces of fondant for the circles and flowers. I used a ruler to cut the stripes. I piped butter cream icing around the layers to give it a finished look. Then I made my adorable unicorn for the top. She is made completely out of fondant. I used balls and shaped them for her body, head, arms and legs. The tail was braided with fondant and I used a toothpick for her horn.

I was surprised it didn’t take me as long as I thought and less then 2 hours later I had an adorable unicorn cake for my adorable daughter. My daughter LOVED her cake!
