I made this Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake for my son’s first birthday. The party was for only 10 children and 30 adults so I didn’t want too much food colouring!
I made a chocolate brownie base for the adults, approx 20x30cm, nice and solid. I made mini cupcakes made from a plain lemon cupcake recipe. I made green jelly (jello) and when it was not quite set I rolled the cupcakes in it, then in dessicated coconut which I had tinted various shades of green with food colouring. These were assembled side on and secured with toothpicks. Face was made by painting a cupcake with red food colouring (no-one was allowed to eat this one!) Eyes are halved green smarties outlined with yellow writing icing. antenna are jelly snakes with blue writing icing to define. Feet were cola jelly snakes.
This cake was fairly easy to make and a good option for someone who hasn’t learnt to work with fondant icing!
