My daughter wanted a cake that looked like a caterpillar for her birthday, so I looked online for ideas and came across this site! I based my cake off of similar ideas, but of course put my own colors and decorating ideas on it to fit what I envisioned! I think this Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake turned out pretty darn cute, and I got a lot of wonderful comments on it so I thought Id share!
I used the Wilton ball cake pan, and made a different flavor of cake for each ball (just your regular store bought box mixes). I used Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, Lemon, and Orange. Each ball takes half the cake mix, so I made cupcakes with the leftover batter. So yummy..and everyone enjoyed all the choices at the party!
I made my own frosting, just your basic buttercream recipe. Then I added some neon coloring gels to make pink, orange, yellow, green and blue. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th cake I used a star tip to decorate, and the 2nd and 4th balls I just iced it on smooth and added swirls and dots. I also put on some mini m&ms to jazz it up a bit!
For the face I used a tube of black decorating gel, with little candied white pearls for the whites of the eyes. The antennas are simply green pipe cleaners I bent into shape!
I wrote the “Happy Birthday” message in frosting as well, and added a few flowers for a finishing touch. I am just a beginner in the cake decorating world, and this was an easy and fun project that turned out super cute! Best of all, my daughter LOVED it!!
