For my son’s first birthday I decided on the “Very Hungry Caterpillar” theme. I actually used this site to get an idea of how to make this cake. I purchased everything I used from Hobby Lobby. They have a great cake making department.
I made two bundt cakes. Not the smooth bundt pan but the one that has ridges. I made a chocolate and a french vanilla (since everyone never likes the same). I used Wilton’s food coloring. The colors were: Juniper Green, Sky Blue, Lemon Yellow, Kelly Green and Christmas Red. I used the Wilton’s ready to use icing (it is stiff, perfect for cakes).
I bought some long cake boards and used these to cut up the bundts. Then i just sort of shaped them together, putting icing in between the pieces to hold them together. I mixed up the colors all different ways. My advice is just to mix and see what you come up with. Red on the head of course. I used the yellow to pipe around the red on the eyes and mouth and around the bottom.
I crushed up Oreos for the dirt. I curved black pipe cleaners for the antenae. I bought a big cake box at Hobby Lobby and it looked like I had it made when really I made it myself. This Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Cake is a very easy cake and everyone loved it. But the icing does color mouths blue and green.
