I made this homemade Yo Gabba Gabba birthday cake for my son’s 2nd birthday party. I actually came to this site before I started it to get an idea of what I wanted it to look like and as usual I got some really good ideas from looking at what others had submitted.
The “cake” was made using two 15″ rectangles layered and two 9×13″ rectangles layered then cut to the shape of Brobie. I used Betty Crocker box yellow cake mix for the cake and Betty Crocker white frosting for the filling and to cover the outside of the cake before I decorated it. To get the shape and look of Brobie I drew the outline of all of him, his body, his lines, his face on a large piece of cardboard then set it on top of the cake and cut around it. Then I put toothpicks in him to mark off all the lines.
I used Wilton Ready to Use Decorator Icing in white to do all of the decorating on him that was green, red, or white. I used Wilton Icing Colors in Kelly Green, Leaf Green, and No Taste Red. I used Wilton Ready to Use Decorator Icing in chocolate and Wilton Icing Color in Black to make his eyes and mouth. You have to use chocolate icing to make black icing, if you use white it will only turn a dark gray. I learned that the hard way a long time ago and wish someone had told me beforehand.
I used a Wilton Grass Tip for all of his fur and a regular round tip for his eyes, mouth and horns. To smooth out the frosting after I put it on to make it look flat I dipped my finger in cornstarch and lightly patted it down. I must say that this was one of the hardest cakes I have ever made and I wish his face looked better, however everyone that was at the party was amazed and wowed! They all loved it!
