I wanted to make a special Zoo Birthday Cake for my son’s 3rd birthday.
This is a three layer cake. For the top two layers I used eight inch round pans, they are chocolate cake made from the recipe on the back of the Hershey’s CoCo can. For the bottom layer I used a 10 inch round cake pan, and a yellow cake mix. The middle layers are vanilla pudding mixed with heavy whipping cream and whole milk.
The icing is also made from scratch. I frosted the crumb coat in white and let it get hard in the refrigerator before decorating the rest. I decorated a small portion blue for the water, and the rest of the top of the cake and sides green for the grass. I used crushed up vanilla Oreo’s for the dirt/rocks between the water and grass, and around the bottom of the cake for decoration. I used chocolate chips for the walking path.
The trees are made from putting a mini marshmallow on the end of a thin pretzel stick and dipping it in green icing. I also used the thin pretzel sticks for the fence around the top of the cake, but left some space open for the candles, since it was for a 3yr. old. The animals are cake toppers from Wilton, and not edible. I used Betty Crocker Easy Write pens to spell out Happy Birthday on animal crackers and stuck them to the side of the cake.
