My friend’s grandson’s first birthday party was at the zoo so of course the birthday boy’s cake and party cupcakes had to have the zoo theme. I make a 6″ 4 layer banana cake filled with caramel, banana pudding and sliced bananas.
The frosting was tradition shortening frosting flavored with some homemade caramel. I used the Hello, cupcake cookbook to start the zoo theme and went from there for the full size cupcakes. I used frosting to build the same faces on the sides and top of the cake. The mini cupcakes were just frosted and topped with a little sugar zoo face, my favorite was the monkey face! The lion cupcake uses licorice laces for the mane and the lion face on the cake I used caramel corn (much easier). The snout on the zebra cucpake is just a necco wafer frosted with black frosting and elephant ears/trunk are melted white chocolate colored with gel food color to match the frosting. My favorite frosting face is the giraffe….cocolate covered sun flower seeds were perfect for his little spots and a caramel softened and shaped is his nose with a tiny piece on a pretzel stick for his little horns and of course necco wafer ears!
