Daffodils Donation Cake for Relay of Life

As part of my New Years resolutions for 2013 I committed myself to participating in more community activities and events – particularly those events that raise funds for charities. And so, I enthusiastically signed myself up to walk for 24-hours in the Relay for Life event in Rockingham/Kwinana.  In addition to helping my team raise over $1500 for the Cancer Council, I wanted to donate a special dessert to the Cancer Survivors who were being honored at a special morning tea on the first day of the Relay.

Purple is HARD to work with!! The fondant is flooded with so much color it either tears too easily or dries too quickly! Not to mention April has been the hottest ever on record in Western Australia since they started recording temperatures in the 50’s and every day I worked on this cake was over 37 degrees Celsius.

I started making daffodils over a month ago and used a fantastic You-Tube demonstration video by Paul Bradford to grow my pile of yellow flowers.. so by the time I got around to baking and decorating the cake – the flowers were ready to attach.

I’m really happy with the way this cake turned out – I think the yellow and the purple are very striking and I hope the Survivors enjoyed a splendid morning tea!

Here’s Paul Bradford’s video:
