I made this tractor cake for my dad who lives back home in Ireland, my daughters call him Ga ga! The reason behind a farm cake is simply because he lives out the countryside at home and grew up on a farm, also I saw a little tractor that looked really cute and really wanted to give it a go!
The tractor I made out of rice crispie treats and carved them into shape. This was great for making the little tractor very light to put on top of the cake and the treats are very easy to work with (just melted butter, marshmallows and rice crispies). For the grass, I had seen this on many other cakes and so I got my daughters play dough kit and started trying to push the icing through one of the shape cutters in the kit – it was very painful on the hands and the plastic tools were not really strong enough for the stiff fondant. I have since started using a garlic press for the grass on other cakes I have made and it is much better.
