Homemade Butterfly Garden Birthday Cake

I made this three-tiered cake for our daughter’s 2nd birthday party. The cake is Wilton’s Butter Cake recipe (similar to pound cake). I used homemade buttercream icing in Sky Blue for the base. The Butterflies, Daisies, and Ladybugs were made several days in advance from royal icing. The Butterflies were produced using the colorflow tecnique. The grass border is Leaf Green, piped with the grass tip. The pink butterflies and piped name are in Rose Pink. I made the Daisies more plump and “cartoony” than traditional royal icing dasies in order to match the party decorations. The Butterfly design is also a derivitive of the decorations.

I learned a valuable lesson with this cake. I attached the butterflies the evening before the party and then put the two larger layers inside a covered cake carrier. This must have sealed in some moisture, because the next day the butterflies on those two layers had softened and collapsed. The smaller layer, that was not sealed in a container, was fine. Thankfully, I had made 6 Butterflies, just in case there was an accident. So, I was able to quickly remove them broken ones and replace them with my backups. In the future, I will probably attach a 3-D piece on-site, just to be safe.
