My daughter found a new love for Hello kitty. So I thought i would surpise her and make her one for her fouth birthday. I also prepared a marshmallow fondant to lay over the top of hello kitty. For this hello kitty i used a rectangle cake pan, and rubbed lots of crisco all over the bottom and the sides of the pan, for easy releasing of the cake. I used boxed cake (betty crocker) and baked it according to the box instructions.
When the cake was baked I let it sit for about 10mins before i removed it from the pan. I then used a pizza cutter to cut out the shape of hello kittys head. (if you make a wrong cut, dont worry you can use frosting as a glue to reattach the pieces). After about an hour of letting the cake cool down i then started to frost it using a spatula. I then placed the frosted cake into the fridge . While the cake was cooling down in the fridge i started to prepare my marshmallow fondant. The Ingredients are as followed:
8 ounces miniature marshmallows (4 cups not packed, or half of a 16-ounce bag)
1 pound powdered sugar (4 cups), plus extra for dusting
3 tbsp water
Food coloring or flavored extracts, optional
I placed the marshmallows in a micowave safe bowl with 3 tbsp of water for a min and 30 seconds. I then stirred them and added crisco to my spoon to prevent sticking of the marshmallows. I then added lots of powered sugar and kept stirring. Then i dusted powered sugar all over my working area and rubbed crisco all over my hands and started to kned the marshmallow as if it was dough. When it wasnt sticky anymore i rolled it out and placed it over the hello kitty head and “Bam” looked great!! Just be careful that it is not to hot inside the kitchen or it will melt, and will be harder to lay over the cake.
If you want to color the fondant use food coloring and kned it into it, you can sperate amounts to make different colors. I used red food coloring for hello kittys fondant bow. For hello kittys eyes i used black jelly beans and a yellow one for her nose. I made her wiskers out of the fondant too and died it black. The cake turned out to be a great tasty one indeed!!!
