I love making theme cakes but as my son has reached his teenage years it’s become difficult to find an idea that he will like. So for his 16th birthday I decided on the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings. He was completely surprised and loved it!
I baked two 8″ round cakes and stacked them. Red Velvet cake is perfect for this. I frosted the entire cake with red frosting (it took an entire tube of red gel food coloring to get the red as deep as I wanted it.) I added the black “eye” and piped yellow around it. I used a bamboo scewer to drag the yellow frosting into the red. Next, I added some streaks of black frosting into the red and again used the scewer to drag and blend the black frosting into the red frosting. Finally, I used the yellow frosting to add “stars” around the outside of the top of the cake and used the scewer to drag the yellow frosting into the red to create the final look.
Love this! Want to make for my son’s birthday next month. Did you use store bought frosting or did you make the actual for lack of a better term “wedding cake” frosting? Thanks for sharing!
