My son couldn’t decide between a Mickey Mouse cake and a train cake, so I decided to combine them. This site was a huge help.
I bought 3 frozen pound cakes, which is a HUGE time saver and still tasted great. I bought some gel icing coloring (I bought the “Cars” kit) and colored the whipped store-bought vanilla frosting.
The cars of the train are just the cake cut in half and frosted. I did trim off the tops to make them flat.
Definitely frost the cake when frozen, it is so much easier.
The caboose is a bit shorter so that the engine could be a bit longer. The back of the engine is the other section of one of the cakes turned on it’s side like most of the other cakes here. The rounded part of the engine are just Oreos that I stacked next to each other and frosted. The wheels are Oreos with M&M’s on them. We connected the trains with Twizzler pieces.
I wrapped a grid cookie cooling sheet with tin foil and it kind of gave the look of tracks, so I didn’t bother adding any more on to that. The topper on the orange was a cake topper purchased at a local grocery store.
All the other Mickey mouse accessories are stickers I bought at a hobby shop. The characters are like a 3-d type sticker so that they could stand up when pushed into the cake and there are a few mouse shaped button stickers that I stuck on with frosting. I then added some candies to them (Goobers, M&M’s, gum drops – which I also used for the smoke stack).
I did also raise up the cakes by seating them on Oreos to give them some height. This cake was quite easy to make. I frosted everything one evening which took about an hour since I mixed multiple colors. It went back in the freezer overnight, then I let it sit in the fridge for a day to thaw.
The decorating took about 30 minutes and I did that just before the party started.
So cute. I was just asking my 2 year old son if he wanted Mickey Mouse or a Choo-Choo birthday party and he said Choo-Choo; however, he loves Mickey too (and so does Mommy!) Anyway, this is a great idea, one I might have to use!
This is great!! I was deciding between Thomas and Mickey for my son’s 3rd birthday and since he’s such a big mickey fan, we decided to do Mickey. I really wanted to make a homemade train cake so I thought I would try to do one like from the choo choo express episode!! I will try to post pics if I can! Great job! You gave me some good ideas!! thanks.
